Life on Toast #346

My Fuyu persimmon tree gave me several dozen tiny fruits this year. They make beautiful pie toppings.

Life on Toast #345

Walking in the neighborhood near the office where I work, I have found that a couple of the businesses that regularly keep their giant garage door openings up have stuffed dogs perched in the shadows near the entry. I don't know who falls for it. They are pretty conspicuous by their lack of movement. Maybe it is not for security at all - maybe the presence of the dog is a signal to UPS or FedEx that there are packages to pick up. Whatever their true purpose, the sunglasses are a cool touch.

The Morning After (Election 2020)

As of 7am on 11.04.2020

It is really the morning after I hate. There is so much to catch up on, so many results to chase down. This year seems worse, as many of the results are too close to be called. There is the waiting and the stress of the unknown.

I will admit I get burnt out easily when it comes to the nitty gritty of politics. There is an anxiety I feel from not knowing all of the information that makes up the whole picture. Everything I read is subject to some sort of spin. After a while I lose trust. It is easy to fall into paranoia.

I have a coping mechanism. I borrowed it from a weight loss theory. If you need to get into exercising more regularly but a gym membership isn't the thing, many trainers will ask what you liked to do as a kid. Could you spend hours skipping rope? Great cardio! Get skipping again. Are you a team sport player? Look for a local league... and so on. When it comes to me and politics, the answer is coloring.

In 5th grade we were sent home with a map of the United States, instructed to watch the election coverage, and to color the states red or blue as the results came in. At first, I was excited. I had an assignment that was going to let me stay up past my bedtime! Sadly, I was bored long before the polls closed on the west coast.

Now I draw the map before I color it. This year, I rushed a bit and the boundaries got weird. However, it kept me engaged and quelled some of the anxiety. I found myself pulling up the maps I drew during the last three elections and doing comparisons.

Regardless of how the election results fall, there is still a lot of work to be done on local, state and federal levels to make the future one that is good for me, you, and our neighbors. No matter who sits in the White House for the next four years, we still will interact with our neighbors everyday. How are we going to make those interactions better for everyone? I know there is a lot of work I need to do. Let's make it better together!
